Thomas Hiebert taught at California State University, Fresno from 1987 to 2026 where he was Professor of Music. He has concertized widely as a recitalist on both valved and natural horn (often with his wife, pianist Lenore Voth Hiebert). Dr. Hiebert has also performed as a member of many orchestras, including the Boston Lyric Opera, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Nebraska Chamber Orchestra, Lincoln Symphony, and the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. For many years he was principal horn of Fresno’s Orpheus Chamber Ensemble, and he has performed as acting principal horn of the Fresno Philharmonic. His solo performing experience is wide ranging—from a concerto performance of Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto No.1 with the Tulare County Symphony to a concert of solo works performed on Baroque natural horn by G.P. Telemann, Vernsberg, and “Mr. Charles” at the 25th Musical Instrument Symposium in Michaelstein, Germany
As a complement to his performance activities, Dr. Hiebert has developed a strong interest in the history of the horn and discovering little-known repertory for the instrument. Dr. Hiebert has publications in The Horn Call, journal of the International Horn Society, the Historic Brass Society Journal, Early Music, a chapter on the horn in the baroque and classical periods for The Cambridge Companion to Brass Instruments, and one in Perspectives in Brass Scholarship: Proceedings of the International Historic Brass Symposium, Amherst, 1995. For The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians he wrote or revised twelve biographical entries on horn players. Mr. Hiebert has given lecture/demonstrations at national meetings of the College Music Society, the American Musicological Society, at many International Horn Society Symposia, as well as at international horn and brass conferences in Michaelstein and Essen, Germany, in Basel, Switzerland, Lyon, France, and at the Paris Conservatoire. He has regularly given presentations/demonstrations at the Historic Brass Society annual meetings in Amherst, Massachusetts, Storrs Connecticut, and Berkeley, California.
Dr. Hiebert served as chair of the Department of Music from 2006 to 2010. In addition, for Spring 2005 he taught in the London Semester program sponsored by California State University, Fresno.
Prof. Hiebert holds a doctorate in horn performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Master of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Douglas Hill and Verne Reynolds respectively. Other teachers include Charles Kavalovski, former principal horn of the Boston Symphony, and at the Cologne Conservatory, Eric Penzel. Mr. Hiebert has taught previously at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
