Johann Zimmerman, engineer

Johann Zimmermann is an engineer with a love for people, adventure, and the outdoors. After receiving his degree from Cornell University, he worked for many years in Africa and Central America with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) and for years with affordable housing in Washington, DC.  For the last 21 years he has lived in Harrisonburg, VA where he founded JZ Engineering, a small structural engineering firm. He has worked extensively with nonprofit agencies such as Habitat for Humanity, with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS) replacing flood damaged residential bridges, and with hurricane reconstruction in Puerto Rico. He continues to travel to various countries where he mentors people in the construction of pedestrian suspension bridges, water cisterns, and hurricane and earthquake reconstruction. Engineering expertise and intercultural experience is the vehicle that brings him to these places. The people he meets and the world he encounters is what brings him joy, which comes to expression through writings and sketches.
